2nd Grade

The emphasis in second grade will include the following:

 

For language arts, students will develop foundational skills such as word analysis, decoding and word recognition, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension. They will develop writing skills in writing strategies, application, and conventions (spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar). The writing text types will include narrative, informative, and opinion pieces.

 

In mathematics, students will develop skills in number operations, algebraic thinking, number sense, measurement, data analysis, and geometry. 

In social studies, students will differentiate between things that happened long ago and yesterday. They will learn basic map skills, the structure of the US government, economic reasoning skills, the importance of an individual's character, and how their actions impacted others' lives.

 

In science, there are three focuses. For Earth science, students will demonstrate how Earth events can occur quickly or slowly. For life science, they will make observations of plants and animals. For physical science, they will study the structure of matter. For health/physical education, students are educated to make good choices in eating, and physical activities.

 

In addition, students will have access to technology (Chromebooks) to enhance their learning using websites like zearn.org, scootpad.com, and connecteEd.com.
